The Machine's Character

KTM built this one dirt-first. The 399 cc liquid-cooled single it shares with the 390 Duke makes 44 hp and 29 lb-ft, but the chassis around it is its own: steel trellis frame, bolt-on rear subframe, a 21-inch front wheel with an 18-inch rear, 10.7 in (272 mm) of ground clearance, 9.0 in (229 mm) of travel up front and 9.1 in (230 mm) at the back. Both ends adjust. The rider aids run off an IMU, so cornering ABS, traction control and three ride modes are all standard, read off a TFT dash. It sits between a dual-sport and a full-size adventure bike, and it leans hard toward the dirt.

This one is for riders who measure a good day in trail miles, not in how quickly they covered the interstate getting there. It stays cheap to run, and the aftermarket is deep enough to build it out around the riding you actually do. The packaging is where you pay. Seat height is 34.2 in (869 mm) with no adjustment, the tank holds 3.7 gal (14 L), and a center stand and luggage are not part of the factory deal. If your miles are mostly pavement and mostly long, this is the wrong shape of motorcycle for you.

The Truth on the Street

Over the years, what I know about this bike from the owners' side has come from paddock conversations, chats with owners at club nights, and the messages riders send me directly. On the 2025 390 Adventure R, the pattern is clear. The praise centers on how it works off-road and how light and lively it feels. The complaints are fewer, and they come up less often.

Suspension that settles rough ground

Riders praise the long-travel WP suspension off-road more than anything else. They describe it as controlled and hard to bottom out, and they say it builds confidence quickly on rough terrain. Owners also say the bike feels lighter than it is, and they credit the narrow midsection and low center of gravity for how easily it moves on and off pavement. Riders call the updated single peppy and free-revving, and owners who added the optional quickshifter like what it brings. Riders also like switching between the three ride modes to match the conditions.

Where some owners hesitate

Some owners find the seat height intimidating, especially riders who don't have much off-road experience yet. Others mention vibration when the single is revved hard, even with the counterbalancer, and say it gets tiring on longer highway stretches.

Known issues

  • ECU software may cause engine stalling (NHTSA Recall 25V-825)

    engine occasional Recall

A defect in the ECU engine management software can lead to stalling at low RPMs, posing a safety risk. A software update resolves the issue.

  • Side stand spring may break (NHTSA Recall 25V-907)

    chassis occasional Recall

Engine vibrations can cause the side stand spring to break, risking unintended deployment. Affected models require spring replacement and rubber protection addition.

  • High coolant temperature warning after refueling

    cooling rare

A single owner reported a high coolant temp warning shortly after refueling, which resolved automatically without intervention.

  • Gear indicator failure at 12,000 mi (20,000 km)

    electrics rare

One owner reported that the gear position indicator failed at 12,000 mi (20,000 km); no other significant issues noted.

The Long-Haul Verdict

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the 390 Adventure R is actually built for.

Aerial view of a winding asphalt road cutting through volcanic terrain on La Gomera, Canary Islands. The road curves through sparse green vegetation with rocky volcanic peaks visible in the background and a settled valley to the left. Clear lane markings, dry climate, partly cloudy sky.

Best motorcycle for Moab?

Slickrock, sand and tight technical lines are what this chassis was drawn for: 21-inch front, long travel, serious clearance. Just build your fuel stops around the 3.7 gal (14 L) tank on big days.

Best motorcycle for BDR routes?

It will take any BDR surface you point it at and cost you almost nothing to run. The limit is logistics: a 3.7 gal (14 L) tank and no factory luggage mean fuel and packing are on you.

Best motorcycle for Highway 1?

Stable and easy company on a twisty back road, so day rides work fine. But it is dirt-first: tall seat, a 3.7 gal (14 L) tank and touring kit sold separately make 400-mile stages hard work.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this KTM 390 Adventure R. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
