BMW S 1000 XR vs F 900 XR: long days, loaded bags, one choice to make.

Tip the BMW S 1000 XR into a corner and it's already changing direction, the steering light under a small push. The BMW F 900 XR drops into the turn with little prompting from the bars. It stays settled once it's leaned over.

So which one do you buy?

The S 1000 XR has the edge if…

Sporty riding on twisty roads

Edges it: S 1000 XR

Through a string of corners, the S 1000 XR feels a little more eager. The difference is harder acceleration and stronger brakes. The gap is small, so ride both.

Comfortable long-distance riding

Inches ahead: S 1000 XR

Deep into a long ride, the S 1000 XR asks slightly less of your back and shoulders. A small margin, and seat fit can overrule it.

What makes each one tick

S 1000 XR

There's a growl in the S 1000 XR's inline-four that hardens into a scream as the revs climb toward redline. Broken pavement doesn't get much forgiveness from the semi-active suspension, and each bump kicks up through the seat even in its softer modes. Dynamic mode stiffens it further. Up front, the brakes bite hard and build evenly.

Nils rode the S 1000 XR in 2020, and in Andalusia in 2021 (NastyNils Testride).

F 900 XR

The F 900 XR's parallel twin thumps out a rumbly exhaust note and pulls willingly in the middle of the revs. Road mode gives the throttle a slight off-on snatch. You'll adapt to it quickly. The upright seat doesn't wear you down all day.

Nils rode the F 900 XR in 2021, and in the Canary Islands in 2025 (NastyNils Testride).
