Harley-Davidson Sportster XL 1200NS Iron (XL1200NS) vs Indian Scout (MY2015)
Crack the throttle off idle on the Harley-Davidson Sportster XL 1200NS Iron and it's already shoving you forward, its air-cooled twin thumping and buzzing hard. The Indian Scout's liquid-cooled twin doesn't shake as it spins up. Its power keeps building in one even line.
So which one do you buy?
The Scout has the edge if…
Sporty riding on twisty roads
Edges it: Scout
Through a string of corners, the Scout feels a little more eager. Credit lighter steering and a sportier chassis. The gap is small, so ride both.
Daily commuting & city riding
Narrow edge: Scout
The Scout edges it for the daily grind. That comes from friendlier manners and lower running costs. It's a small gap, not a reason on its own.
Keeping running costs low
Nose ahead: Scout
The Scout is a touch easier on the wallet to run. Condition still matters more than the model.
Which one's the smarter buy
Nothing in it on value
At these used prices, neither bike is the clear better buy for the money.
What makes each one tick
Sportster XL 1200NS Iron
The Iron's Evolution engine pulls deep from just above a walk, and you won't hunt for a lower gear at highway pace. Mini-ape bars and a low solo seat fold you into a relaxed cruiser triangle, with both boots flat at a stop. The engine doesn't hide its work. The Evolution's mechanical clatter rides along on every mile.
Scout
On Iron Mountain Road, the Scout's cast aluminum frame drops it into each bend at the bar's first nudge. There's ground clearance to hold that lean through the exit. The clutch takes up gently. Each shift snicks the gearbox cleanly into place.
Nils rode the Scout in the Canary Islands in 2021 (NastyNils Testride).
The Voice of Experience
What actually separates them
- The Scout has the lower seat: 26.5 in (673 mm) vs 28.9 in (735 mm).
- The Scout makes more peak power: 100 hp (75 kW) vs 67 hp (50 kW).
- The Sportster XL 1200NS Iron has the larger engine: 1202 cc vs 1133 cc.
Which one for the way you ride
Comfortable long-distance riding
Not their thing
Both of these get tiring on a long day. A proper tourer will treat you better on big miles.
Nothing splits them on character. Ride both back to back and the decision usually makes itself.
