BMW R 1300 GS Adventure (KA2) vs R 1300 GS (KA1)

BMW R 1300 GS Adventure vs R 1300 GS KA1: long days, loaded bags, one choice to make.

Thread a tight hairpin and the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure's wide bar doesn't fight you; there's lock to spare. Out of it in Dynamic, the BMW R 1300 GS KA1's front wheel goes light. It floats briefly, then mostly holds its line.

What makes each one tick

R 1300 GS Adventure

The Adventure strips the fuss from a heavy bike's slowest moments, like a stop on a steep city grade. Squeeze the front brake on a steep incline and the system holds the bike without effort until you're ready to move. BMW has tuned the aids to step in late, which hands experienced riders genuine rope to play with. The boxer doesn't strain at easy revs, and a stab of throttle gets an instant answer, even two-up with full bags. Frost heaves and potholes still get through to the seat, more so once there's a passenger and full cases aboard.

Nils rode the R 1300 GS Adventure in Croatia/Dalmatia and the Canary Islands in 2025, and in Andalusia and the Canary Islands in 2026 (NastyNils Testride).

R 1300 GS KA1

Pushed hard on a technical road, the KA1 squats as it drives out and pitches more than its damping can fully soak up. The nose dives on corner entry. Trail braking unloads the rear, and there's sometimes enough slip to slide. The tires hang on longer than the chassis.

Nils rode the R 1300 GS KA1 in 2023, in Austria, Portugal, and the Bavarian Forest in 2024, and in Andalusia and the Canary Islands in 2026 (NastyNils Testride).
