American Miles, American Sound
The Electra Glide Classic is built around an air-cooled 45° V-twin of 1584 cc making 92 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm. That torque shows up low and stays flat, which is what an 828 lb full-dress tourer actually needs. Six speeds, belt final drive, a 63.5 in wheelbase and a 6.0 gal tank set the tone: this machine is measured in states crossed, not roads strung together. Factory luggage and a preload-adjustable rear shock are standard equipment. ABS and cruise control are options on this trim rather than fitted to every bike, so check the one in front of you.
Ridden the way it wants to be ridden, it ages honestly. The engine is unstressed, the belt is cheap to live with, and aftermarket support is close to bottomless, so almost nothing here is hard to fix or improve. The quirks are known: a whine from the six-speed, a compensator that can clunk on startup with miles on it, wheel bearings that often want replacing at tire changes, and light oil seepage at the stator wires and shift shaft seal. This is for the rider who wants the ritual and the sound with real touring hardware bolted to it, and who can live without the last few percent of polish that defines the top of this class.
Spec sheets don't ride bikes, but they set the baseline.

ABS brake fluid degradation may cause brake failure
Moisture accumulation in the DOT 4 brake fluid can lead to ABS module failure, resulting in loss of braking. Harley-Davidson issued recall 18V-076 for a one-time brake fluid flush using Platinum label DOT 4 fluid.
Recall 08V357000: fuel filter shell cracks and causes loss of fuel pressure
NHTSA campaign 08V357000 (MY2008 FLHP, FLHPE, FLHR, FLHRC, FLHRSE4, FLHT, FLHTC, FLHTCU, FLHTCUSE3, FLHTP, FLHX and FLTR, 47,579 units): the fuel filter shell can crack, leading to a loss of fuel pressure that can cause diminished performance, an engine stall or a no-start condition. Dealers replaced the fuel filter free of charge.
5th gear whine/chatter
The transmission, particularly in 5th gear, emits a loud whining or chattering noise due to the gear cut. This is a characteristic of the 2007-2009 six-speed Cruise Drive transmissions and, while not a failure, can be very annoying.
Premature wheel bearing wear
Wheel bearings can wear out more quickly than expected, often requiring replacement with each tire change. Routine inspection is advised.
Compensator noise and failure
The engine compensator (cush-drive unit on the crank) can develop a loud clunk on startup or fail, especially at higher mileage. Several aftermarket upgrades exist.
Oil leaks at stator wires and shift shaft seal
Oil seepage can occur where the stator wires pass through the left engine case and at the shift shaft seal below the rear linkage. These are typically minor and repairable.

This is exactly your bike. Sound, presence and factory luggage for the run to Sturgis or Daytona, plus an aftermarket deep enough to build it into whatever you want it to be.
Made for Florida State Road A1A · Black Hills · Main Street, Daytona Beach
You'll cover the distance in comfort, two-up and loaded, and it stays planted in crosswind. Just know the pulse never fully leaves, and 6.0 gal sets your rhythm between stops.
Made for Beartooth Highway · Blue Ridge Parkway · Going-to-the-Sun Road
Comfort and scenery, yes. Tight switchbacks, less so. At 828 lb on a 63.5 in wheelbase it wants long sweeping curves and open pavement, not quick changes of direction.
