The Long Road's Best Companion
The K26 RT is built around a 1170 cc air/oil-cooled boxer making 110 hp at 7,750 rpm and 89 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm, which is the shape of engine a tourer actually wants. Telelever takes the dive out of the front end, the shaft drive keeps the maintenance list short, and 6.6 gal of fuel puts real distance between stops. ABS is standard. Traction control, cruise control, heated grips, tire pressure monitoring, the electronically adjustable front suspension and the case system were all boxes you ticked at order time, so no two used examples are equipped alike.
This is a big machine that behaves like a smaller one once the wheels are turning. 571 lb wet is honest weight and you meet it in a parking lot, not at 80 mph on an open interstate. Its natural owner covers states rather than counties, often two-up or fully loaded, and wants the day to end without a sore back. The honest caveat is age. Every one of these is a used bike now, and the 2005 to 2006 servo brake system, the fuel pump flange, the pump controller and the final drive all have histories worth checking before money changes hands.
Spec sheets don't ride bikes, but they set the baseline.

None of what follows comes from my own miles on this bike. It's the picture that builds up over years of listening: paddock talk, club nights, owners who corner me at events, and the messages that land in my inbox from people running one every day. On the K26 RT the pattern holds steady. Riders praise how it travels and how the motor lasts, and the same short list of worries comes up whenever the talk turns to money.
Distance is the first thing anyone mentions. Plush suspension, a seat that stays civil, and a screen and fairing that keep the weather off at speed. Right behind it comes the boxer: torque low down, that unmistakable thrum, and engines that keep piling on miles when the servicing has been honest. Plenty of riders add that it turns far more readily than the weight suggests.
Repair bills dominate the other half. Clutch work means splitting the bike, and the labor cost comes up every time. Final drive bearings and splines wear, bringing leaks or failure. On the earliest bikes the servo brakes are a running subject, with owners quoting figures past what the bike is worth. At walking pace, the weight and tall seat ask a lot of shorter riders.
Fuel pump flange cracking
The fuel pump flange can crack over time, allowing fuel to seep past the seal. BMW revised the part; a cracked flange is usually replaced with the improved version.
Servo brake unit failure (2005-2006)
The servo pump in the ABS modulator can fail, especially if corrosion sets in. When it fails, residual braking performance is dangerously poor. Replacement of the complete unit is the usual remedy.
Final drive bearing/spline wear
The final drive can develop oil leaks or noisy bearings, and the drive shaft splines may wear or corrode. Regular inspection and fluid changes are recommended. Failures can lead to rear wheel lock-up in extreme cases.
Fuel pump controller failure
The original silver-coloured fuel pump controller is prone to corrosion and sudden failure, leaving the rider stranded. A revised black-coated unit is more durable.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the R 1200 RT is actually built for.
Long days on Highway 1 or the Blue Ridge suit it well. It carries speed through open curves calmly and keeps the wind off you, though it never pretends to be light when the road tightens.
Made for Black Hills · Blue Ridge Parkway · Cherohala Skyway
This is the job the RT exists for. Loaded and two-up over Beartooth or Going-to-the-Sun, through changing weather, it holds a pace all day and leaves you fresh at the end of it.
Made for Beartooth Highway · Blue Ridge Parkway · Going-to-the-Sun Road
It will run the Cherohala and hold a clean line, but 571 lb and full touring bodywork are the wrong tools for sharpening technique on tight Appalachian corners. Buy something lighter for that.
Made for Tail of the Dragon · Back of the Dragon · Blue Ridge Parkway
If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.
