The Machine's Character

KTM's smallest supermoto is a real one, not a scaled-down commuter on street tires. The liquid-cooled 125 cc single makes 15 hp at 10,000 rpm and 8 lb-ft at 7,750 rpm, managed by ride-by-wire and sent through a six-speed box. What defines the bike is everything around that engine: genuine supermoto geometry, 9.1 inches of suspension travel front and rear, 10.6 inches of ground clearance, a 320 mm front disc, and 17-inch wheels wearing a 110/70 front and 150/60 rear. ABS is standard. The whole machine is built to be flicked, and it shows.

Ride it the way it wants and it makes sense inside a mile. Keep the revs up, use all six gears, and let the chassis do the entertaining. This bike rewards rider input instead of horsepower, which is why it stays alive on roads where big bikes are barely awake. It also asks something of you. The 33.9-inch seat is full supermoto height, the 2.4-gallon (9 L) tank keeps rides short, and 15 hp turns highway stretches into a tax you pay to reach the good stuff. Accept that trade and you get one of the most honest ways to ride hard on a public road.

The Truth on the Trail

Years of paddock conversations, bike-night talk with owners, and the messages riders send me directly are what this section rests on. On the 125 SMC R the chatter runs unusually consistent: riders talk about the chassis and how the bike behaves, rarely about the 15 hp. The doubts they raise sit outside the riding itself.

What riders keep coming back to

The most repeated praise has nothing to do with output. Riders describe a light, compact machine that changes direction with almost no input, and they rate the WP APEX suspension higher than they expected at this end of the market, crediting it with damping quality they associate with bigger bikes. The engine gets its share too: punchy, characterful, happiest when kept spinning. Supermoto ABS also comes up a lot. Riders who like moving the rear wheel around value being allowed to. Cornering ABS isn't offered.

The worry that keeps surfacing

The concern riders raise most often isn't about the motorcycle. KTM's debt restructuring has owners talking about parts supply, warranty claims, and how much dealer support they can count on going forward. In owner conversations it comes up more than any mechanical complaint.

Best motorcycle for Bay Area?
