The Machine's Character

KTM's entry point into the naked class was not built to feel like an entry point. The 125 cc liquid-cooled single makes 15 hp at 10,000 rpm and 8 lb-ft at 7,750, carried in a steel trellis frame with a 12.6 in (320 mm) front disc, full-size 17-inch wheels and a 150/60 rear tire. The cockpit runs a color TFT with smartphone connectivity, the headlight is LED, and ABS with cornering ABS is standard. A quickshifter is on the options list rather than fitted. Sit on it cold in a parking lot and nothing in the proportions tells you this is the small one.

You carry speed on this bike rather than make it. Peak power lives near the top of the rev range, so you use all six gears and keep the single spinning, and in return you get steering that costs almost no effort, running costs low enough to ignore, and manners that let a newer rider build confidence instead of managing the machine. That combination makes it a genuinely good first motorcycle and a cheap second one for city duty. The honest caveat: rider aids stop at ABS and cornering ABS, and highway pace takes planning rather than a wrist flick.

A winding asphalt road descending through the Appalachian Mountains, likely the famous Tail of the Dragon section in Tennessee and North Carolina. Multiple technical right-hand and left-hand curves are visible in this aerial perspective, surrounded by deciduous forest in spring foliage. Clear sunny conditions, well-maintained asphalt with yellow center lines marking the curves.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the 125 Duke is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best motorcycle for Bay Area?

City miles all week, Skyline on Sunday: that is the exact life this bike was drawn for. Light in traffic, cheap to keep running, and it photographs like a much bigger Duke.

Best motorcycle for Texas Hill Country?

The twisty stuff will be a blast and costs you almost nothing to enjoy. It's the long, open highway hauls between the good roads where 15 hp will test your patience.

Best motorcycle for Angeles Crest?

You will love how it corners and resent how little it has when the canyon opens out. Buy it as a second bike for pure corner speed, not as the one you ride to keep pace.
