SXV 550 Supermoto (MY2008)

Race Bike With Plates

The Machine's Character

Aprilia built the SXV 550 as a race machine that happens to carry a plate. The 550 cc liquid-cooled 77° V-twin sits in a chassis that weighs 295 lb wet, and nothing in the package was softened for the showroom. You get an upside-down fork with adjustment at both ends, a 320 mm front disc, and 17-inch supermoto rubber, 120/70 front and 180/55 rear. Travel runs 10.2 inches up front and 9.6 at the rear, with 12.5 inches of ground clearance underneath. In this class, it sits at the end of the scale where compromise stops.

And it rides like it. The 58.7-inch wheelbase and the light chassis give you direction changes that happen the instant you think about them, and the front end talks back with a clarity most street bikes never manage. The caveat is ownership. Factory sealant between the engine cases fails and lets oil out, often meaning a full teardown to fix properly. Sustained high revs build crankcase pressure the vent system can't always handle. Some 2008 bikes leaked at the head gasket, and starter motors go weak, usually when the engine is hot. Buy it for the ride and budget for the rest.

Known issues

  • Engine case sealant failure

    engine common

Inadequate factory sealant between engine cases leads to oil leaks, often requiring a full engine teardown and reseal.

  • High crankcase pressure / oil blow-by

    engine occasional

Sustained high RPMs cause excessive crankcase pressure that can overwhelm the vent system, leading to oil leaks and potential engine damage.

  • Head gasket failure

    engine occasional

Some 2008 models experienced head gasket leaks, potentially due to inadequate sealing around the oil galleries. This issue appears to be less common than the case sealant problem of earlier years.

  • Starter motor problems

    electrics common

The starter motor is known to fail or become weak, causing difficulty starting or no-start conditions, especially when hot.

  • Speedometer cable routing issue

    electrics occasional

Poor routing can cause the speedo cable to rub against the front brake disc, eventually chewing through and destroying the cable.

Alternatives to the Aprilia SXV 550 Supermoto

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Aprilia SXV 550 Supermoto. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
