Italian Soul, Adjustable Everything

The Machine's Character

The Turismo Veloce 800 RC SCS is the top trim of MV Agusta's sport-tourer, and the Reparto Corse paint makes it clear this bike isn't here to blend in. Underneath sits a 798 cc liquid-cooled inline-three making 110 hp at 10,150 rpm and 59 lb-ft at 7,100 rpm, carried in a trellis frame. Rider aids cover cornering ABS, traction control and ride modes, the suspension is electronically adjustable, and the quickshifter works both up and down. Then there's the Smart Clutch System, which lets you pull away and creep through traffic without touching the lever. Most bikes in this category are sensible machines. This one has a pulse.

On the road it feels lighter than its 463 lb (210 kg) wet weight suggests, and it is far happier on a winding back road than most bikes built to carry luggage. It suits the experienced rider who covers real distance but wants every mile to feel like an occasion, and who buys with the heart as much as the head. The honest caveat is ownership. The clutch pressure sensor can fail somewhere around 3,100 to 3,700 mi (5,000 to 6,000 km), and there are a few smaller annoyances on top of that. Buy it with a dealer you trust close by.

The Truth on the Street

What follows comes from years of listening: paddock conversations, club-night chatter, owner chats after group rides, and the emails and messages riders send me directly. On the Turismo Veloce 800 RC SCS the pattern is clear. Most of the praise goes to the chassis and the engine, and the complaints are small and rarely repeated.

Sport-bike precision, touring calm

Riders consistently describe a bike that steers as accurately as a sport bike and still stays as settled as a tourer should. The triple gets the same steady praise. Owners say it pulls smoothly across a broad spread of revs and still spins up freely at the top. A few owners single out the quickshifter for fast, smooth clutchless changes. One says the Smart Clutch System takes much of the fatigue out of traffic and slow maneuvering.

Tires, switches and a buzz

One owner finds the factory tires better suited to light off-road use than to a road-focused bike, and reports sharper handling after switching to road rubber. Another wants more positive feel from the indicator switch, since it's hard to tell if the signals are on without glancing at the dash. Some vibration shows up when the engine is revved hard, though it isn't described as intrusive for most riders.

Known issues

  • Clutch pressure sensor failure

    drivetrain rare

The clutch pressure sensor can fail around 3,100-3,700 mi (5,000-6,000 km), causing jerky movement and erratic clutch engagement.

  • Rear brake needs periodic bleeding

    brakes occasional

Air can enter the rear brake system, necessitating a bleed to restore proper brake feel and effectiveness.

  • Low-speed stalling (vapor lock)

    fuel system occasional

Some owners experience low-speed stalling, attributed to vapor lock in the fuel system.

  • False neutrals

    drivetrain occasional

Occasional false neutrals reported, particularly when shifting aggressively.

The Long-Haul Verdict

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Turismo Veloce 800 RC SCS is actually built for.

Best motorcycle for Highway 1?

For 200 to 400 mile days on Highway 1 or the Blue Ridge, it fits well: luggage, cruise and heated grips are standard, and the chassis keeps the curves fun. Just know where the MV dealers are on your route.

Best motorcycle for Bay Area?

Few bikes look better parked at Alice's, and the Smart Clutch takes the sting out of city stop-and-go. It isn't electric, though, and you should know about the low-speed stalling from vapor lock.

Best motorcycle for Tail of the Dragon?

On the Dragon or Cherohala it leans far and stays composed, and you can tune the suspension for the day. At 463 lb it's no lightweight sportbike, but it also handles the ride in from Atlanta.
