The Scrambler That Looks Real

The Machine's Character

The Scrambler 900 is a bike you buy with your eyes first, and this generation backs the looks up with real hardware. High-level twin exhausts, a reshaped tank and LED lighting give it the three-glance quality I expect from Triumph. Underneath sits a liquid-cooled 900 cc parallel twin with a 270-degree firing interval, good for 64 hp and 59 lb-ft, with peak torque arriving at just 3,250 rpm. The chassis is serious too: an upside-down Showa fork, twin piggyback shocks, a cast aluminum swingarm and a four-piston radial caliper. Cornering ABS, traction control and ride modes come standard. That's a lot of substance for a style bike.

On the road it's soft and friendly low down, light to steer and more agile than 487 lb (221 kg) suggests. It suits you if you want a classic-looking bike for back roads, small towns and relaxed weekend miles, and if you like to personalize: the accessory potential is huge. Now the honest caveat. With 4.7 in (120 mm) of travel at both ends, this is a road bike in scrambler clothes, and I expect at least 5.9 in (150 mm) from a bike that carries the name. Add a 5-speed gearbox and a 3.2 gal (12 L) tank and you know where it belongs. On pavement!

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Scrambler 900 is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

Classic style, small towns, an unhurried rhythm: that's exactly this bike's world. Plan your fuel stops around the 3.2 gal (12 L) tank, and budget for the optional luggage and cruise control.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

You'll get the looks, the twin's pulse and a brand with real heritage. But 64 hp from a mid-size twin won't give you the big-cruiser ritual. If that's your identity, be honest with yourself.

Best motorcycle for Texas Hill Country?

For relaxed weekend loops it's a joy: light steering, easy manners, great looks at the lunch stop. If you ride hard, 64 hp and a non-adjustable fork will show their limits.

Alternatives to the Triumph Scrambler 900

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Triumph Scrambler 900. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
