Cool Shape, Genuine Fun

The Machine's Character

Husqvarna built the Svartpilen 401 around one idea: a small street scrambler that earns a second look and still holds up when you actually ride it. The 373 cc liquid-cooled single makes 44 hp and 27 lb-ft, carried in a steel trellis frame with an upside-down fork, adjustable at both ends, and 5.9 in (150 mm) of travel front and rear. A 320 mm front disc, Bosch ABS, a slipper clutch and LED lighting are standard. Wire wheels, stubby proportions and a stripped, almost industrial finish do the rest. Plenty of bikes wear the scrambler costume with nothing underneath it. This one has real hardware to back the look.

Nothing about it feels intimidating, and that is the appeal. You can hustle it without ever feeling like you are wrestling it, which makes it as good in city traffic as it is on a tight back road, and it asks very little in return at the pump or the service counter. Few stay stock for long, because the parts support behind it runs deep. The honest caveat is assembly quality. Missing screws, fasteners that back out and panels that sit a little proud are part of the ownership story, along with electrical faults that surface as the miles add up. Go in expecting to sort small things yourself.

The Truth on the Street

Most of what follows didn't come from a press launch. It's what riders have told me over the years at paddocks and club nights, in conversations with owners, and in the emails and messages they send me directly. On the Svartpilen 401 the pattern is consistent: the riding side wins people over, and the details are what wear them down.

Where the little single wins people over

Riders talk about the engine first. The single feels eager, pulling hard through the middle of the rev range and happy to keep spinning, and in town that mix is what riders call fun. The chassis gets the same kind of agreement: sharp, easy to place in a corner, and steady enough that newer riders trust it quickly. The looks still draw comment.

The parts that wear thin

The seat is the complaint I hear most. Thin padding is no issue around town, but riders describe longer days on it as something to endure. Owners also voice doubts about how well the finish holds together over time. Two practical gripes recur alongside that: a small tank that has riders planning stops sooner than they would like, and a gearbox that some find clunky and vague, particularly through the lower gears.

Known issues

  • E-throttle moisture failure (safety recall)

    electrics rare Recall

On 2022-2023 models, moisture can enter the electronic throttle control unit, eroding electrical connections. This may cause the ECU to cut engine power back to idle while riding, increasing crash risk. Affected bikes have been recalled.

  • Engine stalling and kickstand sensor faults

    electrics occasional

Some bikes suffer from intermittent stalling at low RPMs or false neutral/sidestand switch signals, leading to unexpected cutouts.

  • Clutch cable snapping

    drivetrain occasional

The clutch cable can snap prematurely, sometimes as early as 3,000 mi (4,800 km), leaving the rider stranded.

  • Dashboard water ingress

    electrics occasional

The small LCD dash can develop condensation and eventually fill with water, potentially causing electrical issues and poor visibility.

  • Loose fasteners and panel misalignment

    bodywork occasional

Reports of missing screws, bolts, and poorly aligned body panels suggest quality-control deficiencies.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Svartpilen 401 is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best motorcycle for Texas Hill Country?

On the tight stuff around the Twisted Sisters this thing is a joy, and it costs little enough to ride every weekend. The long, hot highway transits are the trade: 2.5 gal (9.5 L) and one cylinder ask for patience.

Best motorcycle for Bay Area?

This is your bike. It handles the city without drama, holds its own on the ridge roads, costs almost nothing to run, and looks like nothing else in the lot when you stop for coffee.

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

The look is right and the pace suits quiet two-lane routes. Plan in short hops, though: with 2.5 gal (9.5 L) and a single cylinder, this is a weekend of back roads, not an interstate marathon.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Husqvarna Svartpilen 401. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
