Maxi-Scooter Done Seriously Right

The Machine's Character

The TMAX Tech MAX sits at the very top of the maxi-scooter class, and it gets there with motorcycle hardware. A 562 cc liquid-cooled parallel twin makes 48 hp and 41 lb-ft, sent to the rear wheel by belt. It hangs in an aluminum twin-spar frame with an upside-down fork up front, which is why it steers like something with a proper chassis. Add Cornering ABS, traction control, ride modes, the YCC-T chip-controlled throttle, cruise control and a seven-inch TFT with Y-Connect with Garmin StreetCross navigation: this is a fully equipped machine. Nothing left to order, almost.

It rides the way a daily tool should: twist and go, smooth, undemanding, and as happy in traffic as on a curvy back road. The build quality is high and the running costs stay low, so it ages like a sensible purchase and not like a toy. It's for you if you're an experienced rider who wants comfort and equipment without giving up a real chassis. The caveat is simple: 483 lb (219 kg) is a lot of scooter, the fork takes no adjustment at all, and a luggage system costs extra. Know that going in.

The Truth on the Street

I've spent years listening to riders: in the paddock, at club nights, in owner chats and in the messages that land in my inbox. For the TMAX Tech MAX the pattern is clear: riders praise the handling and the engine, and the complaints start with the price.

A scooter that carves corners

What riders tell me most consistently is about the handling: it carves corners with real sportiness, with a stability and confidence they don't expect from a step-through. The engine comes right behind. Owners describe a healthy midrange punch, quick enough off the line to surprise people on sport bikes. Many put the equipment on a par with premium touring motorcycles, and the underseat space takes a full-face helmet. Grin included!

The price, and the width

The recurring gripe is the money: owners point out it costs twice as much as some capable maxi-scooters. Some also find it broad between the legs and cumbersome at low speed, without the step-through ease of smaller scooters. Isolated voices mention a rear shock that hits hard on poor surfaces, mostly with feet forward, and an extra-large full-face helmet that may not fit under the seat. That's the list.

Best motorcycle for Bay Area?

You like tech and a machine that looks sharp at the meet-up: TFT, navigation and keyless deliver that. It handles the weekend curves easily, but 48 hp is all you get. Fine by you? Then it fits.

Best scooter for NYC?

For city duty it's nimble, protected, easy to ride and cheap to run. But at 483 lb (219 kg) it's a big machine for short hops and tight parking. Be honest about your space.
