4.5 / 5 NastyNils Rating · against its class

City Commuter, Maxed Out

The Machine's Character

The NMAX 125 Tech MAX is Yamaha's small city scooter with the premium kit bolted on. Underneath is a 125 cc liquid-cooled single with Yamaha's VVA variable valve timing. It makes 12 hp and 8 lb-ft through a twist-and-go automatic and belt final drive, and it's tuned for smooth, frugal running rather than drama. The Tech MAX part is the equipment: a color TFT dash with built-in navigation, smartphone connectivity, keyless ignition, USB charging, LED lighting, and ABS plus traction control as standard. At 291 lb (132 kg) wet, it feels small and grown-up in the same package.

This scooter is built for the city, and it's hard to beat there. It's compact, light, and very easy to live with, and at a claimed 107 mpg with a proven Blue Core engine behind it, running costs stay small year after year. The target rider has a daily grind of stop-and-go traffic, tight parking, and short hops, and wants something that feels nicer than a basic appliance. The caveat is just as clear. 125 cc is an urban displacement, so the freeway is off the table. The fork has no adjustment, and a center stand and luggage cost extra.

The Truth on the Street

What follows comes from years of listening to riders: paddock conversations, owner chats at club nights, and the emails and messages people send me directly. For the 2025 NMAX 125 Tech MAX, the pattern is clear. Owners like how cheaply and quietly it gets through the week, and most of their complaints are about space and top-end pace.

Cheap miles, quiet manners

Fuel economy gets the most praise. Owners say a tank lasts around 185 miles (300 km), and high-mileage commuters and delivery riders in particular speak warmly about it. Riders describe the engine as smooth and quiet with a willing pull from low revs, and they like how quickly the start/stop fires it back up at lights. Many say the dash and connectivity make it feel more upmarket than most rivals. Some also mention ABS that feels reassuring on wet streets, and handling that's closer to a small motorcycle than they expected.

Where owners want more

The main gripe is storage. A full-face helmet fits under the seat, but not much else does, so owners who carry more end up adding a top box. Some riders say passing takes planning. Owners of the previous NMAX point out that the engine, chassis and platform carry over, so apart from the styling and the Tech MAX electronics they see little reason to trade up.

Best scooter for NYC?

This is your bike. It parks anywhere, costs next to nothing to run, and makes crosstown traffic painless, and the Tech MAX kit makes the daily ride feel a class above basic.

Best motorcycle for Bay Area?

For the SF commute and the connected tech it's a great fit. It's not a ridge-road weapon, though. With 12 hp it stays a city tool, so keep a proper bike for Skyline weekends.
