The fork is what I keep coming back to. The 450 runs a Kayaba unit, and to my hands it's the strongest part of the whole chassis. The quick riders in the group went hunting for a fault and found nothing, which is the endorsement I weigh most heavily. It reads the ground and hands me the detail without beating up my forearms, and when I came up short off a face there was travel held in reserve to cover the mistake. The breadth floored me. The test group ran from former professionals down to genuine occasional riders, and every one of them found a setup that worked; the fast guys sorted rear preload inside a session, the rest barely touched a knob. As the surface chopped up through the afternoon it stayed on its line rather than deflecting. The debt it carries is weight. I worked the front harder to tip it in, and I got back on the throttle later out of the corner than a lighter machine would allow.

The front brake is the one that matters here, and it never softened on me. As the afternoon heat built and the surface roughened, it held its bite instead of going long or wooden. Several of the seasoned riders in the group flagged the same thing to me without being asked, which tells you it stood out. A Japanese production motocrosser whose front stopper refuses to fade through a hard day is rarer than it ought to be, and it didn't slip past me.

Before I'd even swung a leg over, standing beside it in the pits, the bike generated real want. The quality reads in the details: seat construction that looks like it will outlast the chassis, anodized hardware, a swingarm and frame that look built for ground far rougher than most of us will ever ride. You don't need to be a motocross insider to see that the good parts went in and nothing got cheaped out.

On paper the service schedule looks meaner than it lives. The valve-clearance interval reads alarming, but a rider out on weekends rather than a full race calendar stacks hours slowly, so those checks come around far less often than the number threatens, and the oil change stays clean enough that most owners handle it in their own garage. The gearbox earned its place by disappearing: every shift landed positive and clean, no false neutrals, the kind of transmission you're glad to forget. Two line items sit on the honest side. The mapping kit is a separate purchase; a hobby rider can have one map loaded for the season and be done, but a fast racer can't skip it, since a few minutes swapping the stock settings showed me clear, measurable traction gains. And somewhere the header dropped from titanium to stainless. Durability is the stated reason, though cost strikes me as the likelier one.

What won me over wasn't the peak number, it's how cleanly the injection is set up. For a big single the pickup off a shut throttle is remarkably tidy, cleaner even than the carbureted smaller bike. Nobody rebuilt this motor; someone simply sharpened the two things that mattered, more shove low down and a harder pull to the limiter. The catch is the fine work: every fraction of wrist turns straight into drive, a joy on open ground and a chore when you're mid-corner nudging your line.

On a stripped race machine, comfort really comes down to whether you can shape it to fit, and this one gives you room to. The bar mounts move forward or back, and the pegs have a second set of holes that let you sit lower in the bike. Taller riders got the most out of dropping the pegs. For me it was a couple of minutes between sessions, and afterward the bike quit arguing with the way I naturally sit.

Day-to-day ease isn't this bike's mission. It fires only on a kick, with no button anywhere, and after time on a machine with an electric start that feels like a step backward. Give it a committed boot, though, and it lights every time. Cold first thing, warm restart, a stall mid-session, across a full test day it never once made starting a chore. The ritual is old-school, but it's honest and dependable, which counts for something on a race bike.
