Muscle Bike That Actually Corners
The Diavel takes a 1198 cc Testastretta L-twin, the same family that earned its stripes in World Superbike, and wraps it in a long, low body riding on a 240-section rear tire. It makes 162 hp and 94 lb-ft, fed through a steel trellis frame and an upside-down fork that have no business handling the way they do. ABS, traction control, and ride modes come standard. This was Ducati's answer to the power cruiser, and it landed as something stranger and better than the label suggests: a Machine of the Year that rode like a sportbike wearing a cruiser's clothes.
On the road it splits into two machines. Below the midrange it's docile and easy, happy to potter through town without a fuss. Open it up and the thing turns urgent, the acceleration genuinely serious. The low 30.3 in seat brings in riders most muscle bikes shut out, and the standard electronics make it lendable in a way a motorcycle this fast usually isn't. The honest caveat: you steer it with the bars and deliberate force, so if you're used to working a sportbike with your hips, that vocabulary doesn't exist here. Early bikes can also surge or stall at low rpm until they're sorted.

Swing a leg over and the first surprise is how low and natural it sits. There's a mild forward lean to the bars, enough to keep you plugged into the front without loading your wrists on a long day. The L-twin sounds the part at idle and gets properly vocal as it climbs. Grab the front brake and it hauls down as hard as anything in this format, no drama. What stays with me is the composure. Roll onto a fast straight and it locks in dead steady, no wandering despite that fat rear, and through corners the suspension actually does its job rather than just surviving. There's zero wind protection, so you take the blast head-on, but the seat and the relaxed cruise at lower revs let it cover real distance. Even the tank display stays readable with the sun straight on it.

The stoppers earned my trust fast. They're built to the same serious standard as the engine, which is the only honest way to slow a bike that piles on speed this quickly. Lean on the front with real intent and it scrubs everything off in a hurry, no theatrics, no softening in the moment. Whatever the motor hands you, the brakes take straight back.
The fat rear tire ought to ruin any bike you actually want to lean, and somehow it doesn't. The damping is dialed in, the mass stays sensible for the class, and the result genuinely carves rather than just aiming itself ahead and hoping. At speed it plants hard and stays put. The catch is input. There isn't enough weight going through the front from your body, so you turn it with the bars and a firm, deliberate shove. Whole-body sportbike technique has no home here.
This motor leads a double life. Keep it under the midrange and it's mild, smooth, easy to dose, the sort of thing you'd happily trickle through traffic on without thinking twice. Then it wakes up. Wind it out and the whole character snaps over: the delivery goes savage, the drive turns properly urgent, and any trace of the easy cruiser you were just riding evaporates. One throttle hand, two completely different machines.
This is where the rider aids earn their keep. Traction control and ABS take a machine that accelerates hard enough to intimidate and make it genuinely shareable. I can put an occasional rider on it and feel reasonably sure they'll return it intact. For something this quick, that breadth matters more than it sounds. It's the thing that lets the whole concept work across real riders of very different skill, not just specialists.
What surprised me most is the reach. The seat sits low enough that a whole class of rider who'd normally never consider a muscle bike can settle onto this one and feel at home. The riding triangle carries a gentle forward tilt, enough to keep me involved rather than perched on top doing nothing. And for a shape this aggressive, it loafs along at low rpm with real ease, covering ground far calmer than the look ever promises.
There isn't much to report here, and that's the honest truth, but one detail stuck with me. The tank display stays perfectly legible even with the sun hitting it dead-on, no squinting, no shading it with a hand. It sounds trivial until you're hours into a bright summer ride and every glance at the instruments actually tells you something useful. A small thing, but it's the kind you only notice when it's missing.

People praise how it looks and how hard it pulls, then turn around and flag the same handful of daily annoyances.
The thing owners bring up first is how it looks. The muscular, futuristic shape and that massive rear tire pull stares wherever the bike goes, and riders say it earns admiration in any crowd. For a lot of them, standing out is a big part of why they bought it.
The complaints cluster too. A recurring one is ride quality: owners find the standard suspension, the front in particular, stiff over bumps and broken pavement, kicking sharp hits up to the rider. Just as common is the passenger seat, which riders call tiny and thinly padded, with almost no wind cover, leaving two-up riding rough beyond a short hop. Some mention the rear brake going spongy over time and needing regular bleeding, and a few note the steering lock and turning radius make tight U-turns and parking fiddlier than expected.
Electronic steering lock failure
The hands-free control unit software (SW43) could cause the steering lock to remain engaged while allowing the engine to start, creating a safety risk. An update to SW44 resolves this.
Kickstand bending/breakage
The original kickstand could bend or fail, causing the motorcycle to tip over. A recall replaced the stand with a strengthened version.
Low-RPM surging and stalling
The engine may surge or stall at low RPM, particularly during the first few thousand miles. Often improves with a remap or fitting an O2 manipulator.
False neutrals between gears
Some riders report the gearbox occasionally missing shifts and landing in a false neutral, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear.
Starter clutch and flywheel replacement campaign
Some early models required replacement of the starter clutch and flywheel under a service campaign (CR159) to prevent starting issues.
Clutch and brake fluid reservoir corrosion
The paint on the master cylinder reservoir caps can peel or bubble, and the reservoirs may leak if overfilled, leading to corrosion of surrounding parts.
