Race-Ready Dirt Weapon

The Machine's Character

Strip it back to what it is: a 450 cc liquid-cooled single in a steel double-cradle frame, built for competition and registered for the road. The suspension carries 11.8 in (300 mm) of travel up front and 12.2 in (310 mm) at the rear, both adjustable by hand without digging out tools, and 13.7 in (347 mm) of ground clearance keeps the cases out of trouble. Traction control and an up-only quickshifter are optional extras; the quickshifter lets you hold your line while you take the next gear, and the see-through tank shows you what is left at a glance.

It ages the way good dirt bikes age, which is to say it takes abuse and keeps working. The frame and running gear are built for landings you did not plan, the aftermarket will sell you anything you want to change, and the 21/18 wheel combination is the size every tire and guard maker builds for. This one is for a rider who already has the skill and the terrain to spend it on: technical trails, sand, rock, a real enduro loop. The honest caveat is that everything making it so good out there makes it awkward everywhere else. Road sections are a transfer stage, not the point.

The test ride

Swing a leg over and the first thing you register is how far down the ground is and how little bike is actually under you. It is narrow between your knees and flat from tank to tail, so you slide forward and back without thinking about it. Standing is the natural position: the bars land where your hands already are, and the pegs leave room to move your feet around. The single has a hard, dry bark that sits deeper than you expect for the size, and there is a steady buzz coming through the pegs at road speed. Half an hour of tarmac and you start counting the miles by the seat foam. Point it at the rough and all of that drops away. You stop noticing the bike and start reading the ground.

Aerial drone view of Palomar Divide Road winding through chaparral-covered mountain ridges in San Diego County. Multiple S-curve sections descend through sparse vegetation with distant valley views visible in the haze. Gravel and packed-earth surface.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the 450 EXC-F 2026 is actually built for.

Factory Butte in Utah's high desert badlands, captured in daylight under clear blue sky. The formation's distinctive multi-colored strata and steep erosional gullies dominate the frame. Arid terrain with minimal vegetation stretches across the foreground and background. Typical American Southwest landscape.

Best motorcycle for Moab?

This is the bike for the hard stuff. Slickrock, sand and rock steps are exactly what that suspension and clearance were built around. Plan your fuel carefully, because 2.2 gal (8.5 L) goes fast out there.

Made for Bar M / Kane Creek · Imperial Sand Dunes · Johnson Valley OHV Area

Best motocross bike for Loretta Lynns?

It holds its own on a track, and the tool-free adjusters let you change the setup between motos. Know what you are buying though: an enduro machine with a six-speed box and lights.

Made for Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area · Fox Raceway at Pala · Glen Helen Raceway

Best motorcycle for BDR routes?

It will eat the hardest sections of any BDR without complaint. The rest is the problem: 2.2 gal (8.5 L), no luggage system, and long pavement link-ups turn multi-day logistics into a fight.

Made for AZBDR — Arizona Backcountry Discovery Route · California BDR South · COBDR — Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route
