TE 300i Rockstar Edition (MY2021)

4.5 / 5 NastyNils Rating · against its class

Factory Spec, Rocky Trail Ready

The Machine's Character

The Rockstar Edition is the TE 300i dressed in factory-team parts, and the upgrades do real work. At its heart sits a 293 cc liquid-cooled TPI two-stroke single, fuel-injected and driving a 6-speed gearbox. Around it you get a Brembo hydraulic clutch, Brembo brakes, a WP Xplor fork and a linkage-assisted WP XACT shock, both adjustable, with 11.8 in (300 mm) of travel at each end. A front disc protector, a tougher rear chain guide and a ribbed seat cover finish the package. This is a hard-enduro tool first. The Rockstar graphics are the least important thing on it.

Its whole reason to exist is traction. Power comes in low and linear and is easy to meter on a greasy ledge, and the harder and rockier the trail gets, the better this bike works. It is built for the experienced rider who goes looking for rock gardens, slickrock and tight technical climbs, not for long road transits between them. The honest caveat is upkeep. A two-stroke wants attention, so budget for reed valve checks, fork seal service and fresh clutch plates if you hammer steep climbs. On a 2022 bike, confirm the recall for the front brake caliper retaining clip has been done before you ride.

The Truth on the Trail

Over the years this bike has come up again and again: in the paddock, at club nights, in chats with owners and in the messages riders send me directly. The pattern is consistent. Owners praise how it behaves when the going gets slow and steep, and their gripes center on what it leaves out and how it runs under load.

Hard to stall, easy to trust

The praise riders repeat most is how hard this bike is to stall. Owners describe it chugging out of the slowest, steepest sections, even at idle with the clutch pulled in, and several mention a heavy flywheel feel. Lighter riders in particular say the suspension takes the intimidation out of hard enduro trails.

What owners wish were different

Some riders report light detonation and a lean surge at higher speeds or under load. A few say slow technical riding on hot days can push it toward overheating, and they point out that it has no cooling fan. Others would like a backup kickstarter for remote rides, since starting is electric only. And the same suspension can feel harsh or bottom out if it isn't set up for the rider's weight and terrain.

Known issues

  • Front brake caliper retaining clip may detach (recall)

    brakes rare Recall

Affected 2022 TE 300i (including Rockstar Edition) may have improperly installed retaining 'R' clips on the front brake caliper pin, which can fall out and cause brake failure. Husqvarna issued recall HTB2108 / NHTSA 21V-678 / CPSC 22-702.

  • Inconsistent low-RPM power delivery / fueling

    fuel system occasional

Some owners report stalling, hesitation, or hanging idle at low RPM, possibly due to fuel mapping or injector clogging. An ECU reflash or injector cleaning often resolves it.

  • Reed valve wear causing hanging idle

    engine occasional

Worn or damaged reed petals can lead to a hanging idle and poor low-end response. Regular inspection and replacement of the reed valve assembly is recommended.

  • Brake fade under prolonged heavy use

    brakes occasional

Extended hard riding can cause brake fluid to overheat, leading to a spongy lever feel and reduced stopping power. Regular fluid changes and pad inspections are recommended to mitigate the effect.

  • Front fork seal leaks or inadequate damping

    suspension occasional

Some owners experience leaking fork seals or inadequate damping from the WP Xplor fork, particularly after extended use. Regular seal inspection and oil changes help maintain performance.

  • Battery drain / starting issues

    electrics rare

A few owners have reported the battery going dead or difficulty starting, particularly after periods of inactivity. Keeping the battery on a tender and checking connections helps.

  • Plastics prone to cracking on impact

    bodywork occasional

The stock plastics, including side panels and fenders, can crack on minor falls or rock impacts. Upgrading to aftermarket plastics is a common preventative measure.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the TE 300i Rockstar Edition is actually built for.

Factory Butte in Utah's high desert badlands, captured in daylight under clear blue sky. The formation's distinctive multi-colored strata and steep erosional gullies dominate the frame. Arid terrain with minimal vegetation stretches across the foreground and background. Typical American Southwest landscape.

Best motorcycle for Moab?

This is your bike. Slickrock ledges, sand and technical desert sections are exactly where its low-end traction and plush suspension pay off. Just plan fuel stops carefully on long loops.

Best motocross bike for Loretta Lynns?

It will handle a practice track, but it is tuned for traction and survival in the woods, not for outright motocross speed. Ride it on the track for fun. For racing, buy a dedicated motocrosser.

Best motorcycle for BDR routes?

It is the wrong tool for a full BDR. The 2.2 gal (8.5 L) tank and lack of luggage mean it can't carry the load or cover the distance, but as a second bike for the roughest sections it is superb.
