Classic Looks, Real Muscle

The Machine's Character

The Scout Classic runs a liquid-cooled 60° V-twin, 1250 cc, 105 hp and 82 lb-ft, carried in a steel tube frame that uses the engine as part of the structure. That is real output for a mid-size cruiser, and it is not there just to fill a brochure line. Around it sits the part most buyers are actually paying for: a long, low silhouette on 16-inch wheels, a 26.8 in (680 mm) seat, and a stance that stays coherent from every angle. An LED headlight comes as standard, which tells you what this version was built to do.

It is honest about what it is. Presence comes first, the riding is relaxed rather than urgent, and the design should still look right in ten years because it was never chasing a trend. That suits a rider who wants identity and mechanical feel more than a spec sheet, and who plans to make it their own over time. Two things to check before you sign. Recall 24V-970 covers a false neutral reading on the display for 2025 Scouts built before December 23, 2024, cured with ECM software. Traction control, ride modes and cruise control are options here, not standard equipment.

A long, straight paved road stretches toward the horizon through agricultural fields in Vermont. Power lines and a mailbox are visible along the roadside. Lush green vegetation, cumulus clouds, good daylight conditions. The landscape is flat to gently rolling. Asphalt pavement appears to be in good condition. Rural American setting.

The Truth on the Street

Years of paddock conversation, club-night chat with owners, and the messages riders send me directly sit behind this section. On the Scout Classic that chatter lands in two clear piles. Riders like the way it moves and what the engine does once it is spinning, and they keep circling back to the same short list of irritations.

Easy To Move, Willing To Rev

The most consistent praise is for how little this cruiser asks of you when it changes direction. Riders describe a bike that is easy to place, easy to maneuver, and lighter on its feet than they expected from the shape. The engine draws the same reaction: a solid mid-range punch and a top end that keeps pulling toward 7,250 rpm, with more appetite for revs than the model it replaced. Riders of very different sizes report the relaxed, upright position suits them straight away.

Down Low And In The Wiring

The complaints gather low in the rev range. Hesitation and the odd stall below 2,500 rpm come up again and again, most visibly in stop-and-go traffic and slow maneuvering. Electrical faults are reported just as often: dark displays, drained batteries, engines cutting out. Higher up, riders on long highway stints mention the vibration. A few owners swap the stock seat.

Known issues

  • False Neutral Indication (Recall 24V-970)

    electrics common Recall

The rider display may incorrectly indicate neutral; unauthorized movement can occur, increasing crash risk. All 2025 Scout and Scout Sixty models produced before Dec 23, 2024 are affected. ECM software update available free of charge.

  • Starter Cable Melting/Electrical Smoke

    electrics rare

In isolated instances, the starter cable can overheat and melt, producing smoke and leaving the bike stranded. Possibly related to parasitic drain or faulty component.

  • Low-Speed Engine Stalling

    engine occasional

Lean fuel mapping can cause the engine to frequently stall at low RPMs, especially when cold or during light-to-light city riding.

  • Weak Stock Battery

    electrics occasional

The OEM battery may fail prematurely or struggle to hold charge, often requiring replacement or a tender.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Scout Classic is actually built for.

Aerial view of a winding asphalt road cutting through volcanic terrain on La Gomera, Canary Islands. The road curves through sparse green vegetation with rocky volcanic peaks visible in the background and a settled valley to the left. Clear lane markings, dry climate, partly cloudy sky.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

Sound, stance and a bike people walk over to look at: that part it delivers. Just know the 3.4 gal (13 L) tank means more fuel stops than the heavy metal around you on a Sturgis run.

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

This is your bike. Period looks that hold up in every photo, a relaxed pace it genuinely prefers, and an optional luggage system if you want to spend a week on two-lane roads and old main streets.

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

Straight talk: it holds a highway line beautifully, but 3.4 gal (13 L), cruise control on the options list and a non-adjustable fork with only preload at the rear make long two-up days more work than they should be.
