Softail Springer FXSTS (FXSTS)

Old Iron, No Apology

The Machine's Character

The Springer front end is the whole point of this Softail. An exposed spring fork out front, a skinny 21-inch wheel under it, and 1449 cc of air-cooled 45-degree V-twin sitting in the middle. The numbers are modest at 65 hp, but the 86 lb-ft is what you actually ride, fed through a 5-speed gearbox and a belt. On my scale it takes a flat 10 for chopper style and a flat 10 for retro shape, and in this class that is not a consolation prize. The look is the product. The engineering exists to carry it.

It rides the way it looks: deliberate, low at 26.5 inches, 710 lb wet, happiest rolling at an unhurried pace. What ages well here is hardware rather than software. There is nothing on board to go obsolete, and the aftermarket depth is deep enough that no two of these stay identical for long. This is for the rider who buys presence first and accepts the bill that comes with it. The caveat is the equipment list: no ABS, no traction control, no rider modes, and a front end with no adjustment of any kind. The rear shock takes preload, and that is the whole tuning menu.

The spring-loaded cam chain tensioners in the Twin Cam 88B engine (2005-2006 models) can wear prematurely, potentially leading to engine damage if not replaced. Upgrading to hydraulic tensioners is recommended.
