Fat Boy 117 (MY2025)

Maximum Style, Maximum Torque

The Machine's Character

The Fat Boy has never asked permission to be subtle, and this one leans harder into that than ever. The Milwaukee-Eight 117 Custom sits in the Softail frame putting out 102 hp and 126 lb-ft from 1923 cc of air/oil-cooled 45-degree V-twin, which is a torque number you feel in your chest rather than read on paper. Solid Lakester wheels, a 7-inch LED headlamp, and that fat front end give it a silhouette nobody has to squint at. It scores a flat 10 on chopper style and characterful design, and in this class that is the whole point.

Underneath the theater there is more competence than the stance suggests. Cornering ABS, traction control, ride modes, and cruise control come standard, and both ends of the suspension are adjustable, so the bike behaves like something built in this decade. It runs 694 lb (315 kg) wet on a 65.0 in (1651 mm) wheelbase, and you plan your parking-lot moves accordingly. The 25.9 in (658 mm) seat makes both boots reach the ground easily. Buy it for presence and mechanical drama; do not buy it expecting a light, flickable machine, because it never pretended to be one.

The Voice of Experience

Portrait of NastyNils

The test ride

You notice the sound before anything else. Air-cooled V-twins talk, and this one has a low, unhurried voice at idle that firms up into something serious once you crack the throttle open. Vibration comes through the bars and pegs in measured pulses, enough to remind you there are two big pistons doing real work, never enough to numb your hands on a long stretch. The riding position drops you low into the bike rather than perching you on top of it, feet forward, arms relaxed, with the mass sitting well below your hips. At highway pace it settles and tracks straight, an 8.8 for high-speed stability that you feel as calm rather than effort. The fit and finish holds up under close inspection: paint, metal, and switchgear all read as deliberate.

A long, straight paved road stretches toward the horizon through agricultural fields in Vermont. Power lines and a mailbox are visible along the roadside. Lush green vegetation, cumulus clouds, good daylight conditions. The landscape is flat to gently rolling. Asphalt pavement appears to be in good condition. Rural American setting.

The Truth on the Street

Known issues

  • Airbox breather port blockage causes crankcase pressure and oil leaks

    engine rare Recall

A blocked airbox backplate breather port allows crankcase pressure to build, potentially ejecting oil when the dipstick is removed. Can cause milky residue on dipstick and oil leaks at exhaust joints. The issue prompted recall 25V375 affecting certain 2025-2026 Softail models including the Fat Boy.
