BMW S 1000 XR (Mark 3) vs M 1000 XR (MY2024)
BMW S 1000 XR vs M 1000 XR: which one's easier to live with on a long trip.
Hit a broken patch of pavement on the BMW S 1000 XR and it doesn't flinch: the damping reworks itself on the fly and the ride stays plush. The BMW M 1000 XR's suspension stays compliant there too.
So which one do you buy?
The M 1000 XR has the edge if…
Daily commuting & city riding
Small edge: M 1000 XR
The M 1000 XR edges it for the daily grind. It's a small gap, not a reason on its own.
Sporty riding on twisty roads
Edges it: M 1000 XR
The M 1000 XR nudges ahead once the pavement starts to wiggle. What tips it: more feel through the bars and a sportier chassis. Don't expect a night-and-day difference.
Which one's the smarter buy
No clear winner on value
The S 1000 XR costs less, but that gap doesn't make it the clear better buy. Neither bike wins on value alone.
What makes each one tick
S 1000 XR
Past the middle of the tach, the S 1000 XR's inline-four climbs into a hard rush with an exhaust snarl that won't let you short-shift. The engine's happiest spinning hard. There's a cost at freeway speeds, where a buzzy tingle works into the bars and footpegs and can wear on a long day. Loaded two-up, the shock still holds its line over bumps.
M 1000 XR
Upright bars and a roomy seat mean the M 1000 XR doesn't punish a long day, yet its ShiftCam four sits among the most powerful in sport-touring. There's a searing surge when the throttle's pinned high in the revs. It doesn't run out of shove. The M brakes bite hard and talk back through the lever.
Nils rode the M 1000 XR in Slovakia in 2024 (NastyNils Testride).
