Sound, Shape, And Soul
The 916 is the bike that rewrote what a superbike was supposed to look like. Massimo Tamburini's shape, the single-sided swingarm, the twin pipes tucked under the tail: three decades on, none of it has aged into a period piece. Underneath the bodywork sits a 916 cc desmo L-twin making 109 hp and 66 lb-ft, liquid-cooled, six speeds, chain drive. It is not a numbers bike and never was. The chassis is where the money went. A 55.5-inch wheelbase, upside-down fork, adjustable at both ends, 320 mm front discs, and a front end that tells you exactly what the tire is doing.
At 450 lb wet with a 31.1-inch seat, the 916 asks you to commit before it gives anything back. Ride it lazily and it feels heavy and stiff-wristed. Ride it with intent and the whole thing snaps into focus: line precision, huge lean clearance, rock-solid at speed. This is a bike for a rider who already knows how to work a corner and wants the experience, not the lap time. The honest caveat is ownership. There is no ABS, no traction control, no IMU, and the maintenance bill is real. Buy one with paperwork, not promises.
Spec sheets don't ride bikes, but they set the baseline.

Chassis
None of this is my own riding. It's twenty-plus years of listening: riders at race meets, owners cornering me at club gatherings, and a steady stream of messages from people who actually live with one. The comments land in two piles, what the bike gives and what it asks back.
Three subjects dominate. Owners keep returning to the desmo twin, to the spread of torque and a sound they rate higher again once Termignoni pipes are on. The shape collects just as many votes, still ranked at the top of any beautiful-motorcycle list. Handling is the third constant, with cornering confidence owners say still measures up decades on.
Upkeep runs through nearly every ownership story: rockers that flake, electrical faults that come and go, and service bills owners warn each other about. Comfort is the second refrain. Little wind protection, nowhere to stow anything, a firm seat, and a dry clutch heavy enough to wear you down in traffic. The riding position gets blamed for sore wrists on long days, and a few mention how hot it gets around the thighs on warm ones.
Flaking rocker arms
The chrome plating on the camshaft rocker arms can flake, leading to accelerated camshaft wear and expensive repairs.
Starter clutch damage from weak battery
Repeated starting problems from a weak battery can damage the starter clutch, which in severe cases leads to engine damage.
Electrical / charging system failures
Poor quality connectors and voltage regulators lead to charging system failures, battery drain, and hard starting. The regulator/rectifier can overheat and fail.
Base gasket oil leak
Oil leaks from the base gasket are fairly common and require gasket replacement.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the 916 is actually built for.
This is where the 916 makes the most sense. Angeles Crest at a committed pace suits it perfectly, though the wrists and the maintenance schedule both send you a bill afterward.

The 916 will teach you more about line precision than most modern bikes, but it gives you no electronic safety net. Bring it for the experience and the sound, not for chasing your personal best.

Fine for a spirited Saturday on the Twisted Sisters, hard work for anything longer. Treat it as a weapon you take out deliberately, not a bike you rack up easy miles on.

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.
