Street Scrambler Sandstorm Edition (MY2021)

3.5 / 5 NastyNils Rating · against its class

Desert Style, Road Reality

The Machine's Character

The Sandstorm is a 775-unit version of the Street Scrambler, and the point of it is presentation. Three-tone paint, factory scrambler hardware, a 19-inch front wheel and a high-pipe silhouette that reads as 1960s desert racer from twenty feet and holds up at arm's length. Underneath sits the 900 cc liquid-cooled parallel twin, 64 hp and 59 lb-ft with the torque peak arriving at 3,250 rpm. ABS, traction control and three ride modes come as standard, along with a slipper clutch and a USB port. It is a styling exercise built on genuinely competent hardware.

Judge it as a road bike with scrambler manners and it makes complete sense. It carries 4.7 inches of travel at both ends and 5.9 inches of ground clearance, which is naked-bike territory, so hardpack fire roads and gravel driveways are the honest ceiling. That is the caveat this category cares about most, and I will not pretend otherwise. What you get instead is a 492 lb machine with a 31.1-inch seat, steady behavior at highway speed and low-effort steering, plus a deep accessory catalog if you want to keep personalizing it. Buy it for the look and the character. Both are real.

The Truth on the Street

This one isn't my test ride. It's what I've picked up over years of listening: paddock talk, parking-lot conversations, club nights, and the messages riders send me directly. On the Sandstorm the pattern is consistent. Owners praise how it behaves at everyday pace, and the complaints show up whenever the bike gets pushed past it.

Where the twin wins riders over

The praise comes back to the pull down low. Riders describe the twin as ready from 2,500 rpm, which makes town work simple and keeps longer rides relaxed. The seating position draws the same approval: wide bars, mid-set pegs and a slim tank profile that lets riders of different sizes settle in all day. Plenty also report more hardpack capability than they expected, taking gravel roads and easy trails without drama.

Where owners run into the limits

The gripes are quieter but they repeat. Some riders say the engine runs out of breath past 6,000 rpm and that overtakes need more planning than they'd like. Others mention a jolty ride on broken pavement, with sharp hits arriving straight at the rider. Among those who stand on the pegs off pavement, the bars sit too low to be comfortable and the high pipe pushes the right foot outboard, costing them control.

Known issues

  • Alternator wiring may short and overheat (recall)

    electrics rare Recall

The wiring between the alternator and main harness connector can form a bridge under certain conditions, leading to a short circuit and potential overheating. Affected VINs require installation of a new wire alignment clip.

  • Sub-standard parts and poor build quality reported

    bodywork occasional

Some owners have reported issues with overall build quality, including premature corrosion or component failures, though these appear scattered rather than systematic.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Street Scrambler Sandstorm Edition is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

This is your bike for Kancamagus and Maggie Valley pace. Upright, characterful, stable at speed. Just plan fuel stops around 150 miles and accept it is a road bike wearing dirt clothes.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

It has genuine identity and a sound worth listening to, but it is a light 492 lb twin, not a big-bore cruiser. If your rally week is long highway droning, this asks more of you.

Best motorcycle for Texas Hill Country?

The easy steering and 59 lb-ft down low suit Hill Country back roads well. You ride unfaired and with 3.2 gallons, so it works better as a half-day loop bike than an all-day run.
