The Bare Frame That Built Monsters

The Machine's Character

This is the bike that put Ducati back on its feet. Miguel Galluzzi built the first Monster out of what was already on the shelf: the exposed steel trellis frame from the 888, the air-cooled 904 cc L-twin from the 900SS, a round headlight, a teardrop tank. Nothing else. It makes 73 hp at 7,250 rpm and 56 lb-ft through a 6-speed gearbox, and the whole point is that you can see every piece of it doing its job. The naked bike as a category still runs on the template this machine set.

Chassis

  • Rear Suspension Adjustable Standard
A winding asphalt road descending through the Appalachian Mountains, likely the famous Tail of the Dragon section in Tennessee and North Carolina. Multiple technical right-hand and left-hand curves are visible in this aerial perspective, surrounded by deciduous forest in spring foliage. Clear sunny conditions, well-maintained asphalt with yellow center lines marking the curves.

Known issues

  • Frame cracking at steering head/engine mounts

    chassis rare

Early M900 frames can develop cracks at the steering head and engine mounts, often triggered by aggressive riding or pothole impacts.

  • Carburetor emulsion tube wear

    fuel system occasional

A worn emulsion tube can cause poor running and surging at steady speeds, often resolved by replacement.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the M 900 Monster is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best motorcycle for Texas Hill Country?

Hill Country sweepers and a bike this simple get along well. Just know you are riding a carbureted classic with no wind protection, so plan around the heat and the long slabs between the good roads.

Best motorcycle for Angeles Crest?

Narrow, low-seated and generous on lean angle, it suits canyon pace better than the spec sheet suggests. If your weekend is about outright speed and electronic backup, this is not your tool.

Best motorcycle for Tail of the Dragon?

Repeated technical corners are where this chassis makes sense. It rewards smooth inputs rather than horsepower, though riding it that hard means inspecting the frame regularly.
