Italian Iron With Real Soul

The Machine's Character

The Eldorado is built around a 1380 cc transverse 90-degree V-twin, air and oil cooled, with the cylinder heads standing out in the airstream where you can see them working. It makes 96 hp and 89 lb-ft, and that torque peak lands at 2,750 rpm, which tells you most of what you need to know about how this bike is meant to be used. Drive goes back through a six-speed box and a shaft. ABS, traction control, ride modes and cruise control are standard, so the classic bodywork is doing thoroughly modern work underneath. It is an Italian answer to the big cruiser, not an imitation of one.

Ridden the way it wants to be ridden, it finds a rhythm and holds it. The 66.3 in wheelbase and 16 in wheels give it real composure once you are up to speed, and the finish holds up well if you stay on top of it. This is for riders who want presence and an unhurried pace instead of a number to quote. The honest caveats: 743 lb is genuine weight at walking speed, the fork carries no adjustment at all, so you take the ride as delivered, and 32 mpg from 5.4 gal means planning stops around 170 miles. Luggage is an option here, not standard equipment.

A long, straight paved road stretches toward the horizon through agricultural fields in Vermont. Power lines and a mailbox are visible along the roadside. Lush green vegetation, cumulus clouds, good daylight conditions. The landscape is flat to gently rolling. Asphalt pavement appears to be in good condition. Rural American setting.

The Truth on the Street

This isn't my test ride. It's what I've picked up from Eldorado owners over the years, in parking lot conversations, at club nights, and in the messages riders send me once they've lived with one. The praise comes back remarkably consistent, and so do the complaints.

What owners keep coming back to

Torque is the first thing they bring up: a big low-rpm shove that lets them loaf along in a tall gear and pass without downshifting. The brakes earn the same kind of trust, described as strong and predictable every time. Riders also say it steers lighter than the weight suggests and holds decent cornering clearance, and that the seat stays comfortable through long days.

The gripes that keep surfacing

Heat is the loudest one. Riders consistently report hot air off the cylinders landing on their legs, uncomfortable in warm weather or in slow traffic. The stock exhaust draws nearly as much comment for being too quiet for an Italian twin. The third complaint shows up whenever the bike isn't rolling: moving it by hand takes real effort, and owners say so plainly.

Known issues

  • Front brake master cylinder drag (NHTSA recall 19V561)

    brakes rare Recall

2016-2018 Eldorado 1400 models may have a defective front brake master cylinder that can cause the front brake to drag or apply unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash. A safety recall was issued by NHTSA (campaign 19V561).

  • Headlight wiring chafing

    electrics rare

In isolated cases, poorly routed wiring behind the headlight can rub against the frame, shorting out and causing headlight failure. This issue requires professional repair.

  • Exhaust crossover pipe cracking

    exhaust common

The exhaust crossover pipe under the engine is prone to cracking at the welds, often appearing within the first year of ownership or around 5,000 miles. Replacement with an aftermarket crossover is a common fix.

  • Instrumentation fogging

    electrics occasional

Some owners report moisture buildup inside the instrument cluster, causing temporary fogging and poor visibility of the gauges, particularly in humid conditions.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the California 1400 Eldorado is actually built for.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

You'll roll into Sturgis or Daytona on something nobody else in the row is riding, with the stance and the torque the scene expects. The engine note is Italian rather than American, and that is the whole point.

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

It has the shaft drive, the cruise control and the high-speed calm for long days, two-up included. Plan fuel stops near 170 miles, and budget for luggage, since it is an option rather than standard.

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

Small towns, old highways, no hurry: this is exactly that bike. It carries genuine heritage looks without the bagger bulk, and it earns attention parked outside the diner as much as on the road.
