Heritage Gone Dark

The Machine's Character

The Heritage Classic 114 takes the classic saddlebag silhouette and builds it on the monoshock Softail chassis, which is the part most people underestimate. The Milwaukee-Eight 114 runs 1868 cc of oil-cooled 45° V-twin, good for 93 hp and 119 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm through a six-speed box and a belt. The styling is deliberately darker than the chrome-heavy reading of this shape, and the 10.0 it earns for chopper style is the highest score on the card. Lockable bags and a quick-release windshield sit on the bike from the factory, not as an accessory catalog raid.

It rides like what it is: 721 lb (327 kg) with a 26.8 in (680 mm) seat and a 64.2 in (1630 mm) wheelbase, so the mass sits low and the bike tracks straight at speed, scoring 8.8 for high-speed stability. ABS, cruise control, and an LED headlight are standard. This is a bike for the rider who wants presence and a real touring range from the 5.0 gal (18.9 L) tank. The honest caveat: the fork is not adjustable at all, only the rear shock takes preload, and at that weight you feel every pound in a parking lot.

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

Cruise control, a 5.0 gal (18.9 L) tank, and rock-solid highway manners cover the big days. Two-up and fully loaded on mountain passes asks more of the chassis than a dedicated tourer would.
