Softail Fat Boy 114 FLFBS (MY2025)

Pure Chrome, Zero Apology

The Machine's Character

The Fat Boy is the shape most people picture when they hear the word cruiser, and this one earns the picture. Solid disc wheels, a 240-section rear tire, and a broad slab of a tank give it a stance you can read from a block away. Underneath sits a 1923 cc air/oil-cooled 45° V-twin making 103 hp and 126 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm, sent through a six-speed box and a belt. Cornering ABS, traction control, ride modes, and cruise control come standard, so the presence arrives with real hardware behind it.

It rides the way the numbers read: long, low, and happiest holding a line on open road rather than being hustled through town. This is a bike for the rider who wants ritual and presence, who plans a year around a rally and wants to arrive on something people walk over to look at. Build quality holds up to a close inspection, and the parts support is deep enough that few of these stay stock for long. The honest caveat is mass and steering effort. At 694 lb wet on that wide rear tire, it asks for muscle at walking pace, and the fork gives you nothing to adjust.

The test ride

Swing a leg over and the first thing you notice is how low it puts you. 26.6 in of seat, boots out front, and enough width under the tank that the bike feels broad before it feels heavy. Off the stand the 694 lb is honest about itself, then most of it disappears the moment you're rolling, because the weight sits so low. At idle the V-twin shakes the bars and the mirrors in a way that reads as mechanical rather than broken, and it cleans up as the revs climb. The sound is the payoff: a deep two-into-two rumble you feel in your chest more than hear. At highway pace it tracks flat and settled, that 65.0 in wheelbase doing exactly what it looks like it should, and you fall into a rhythm. The 5.0 gal tank decides where you stop.

A long, straight paved road stretches toward the horizon through agricultural fields in Vermont. Power lines and a mailbox are visible along the roadside. Lush green vegetation, cumulus clouds, good daylight conditions. The landscape is flat to gently rolling. Asphalt pavement appears to be in good condition. Rural American setting.

Known issues

  • Airbox backplate breather port may be blocked (recall)

    engine rare Recall

On certain 2025-2026 FLFB models, the airbox backplate breather port may be blocked, causing pressure build-up in the crankcase. When the dipstick is removed, oil can be ejected, increasing injury risk. Recalled for inspection and repair. (NHTSA recall, 0.4% affected)

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Softail Fat Boy 114 FLFBS is actually built for.

Aerial view of a winding asphalt road cutting through volcanic terrain on La Gomera, Canary Islands. The road curves through sparse green vegetation with rocky volcanic peaks visible in the background and a settled valley to the left. Clear lane markings, dry climate, partly cloudy sky.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

This is the bike that ride exists for: stance, sound, and a parts catalog deep enough to make it unmistakably yours, with cruise control and cornering ABS for the miles between rallies.

Made for A1A — Florida Atlantic Coast · Black Hills / Sturgis Rally Hub · Daytona Main Street / Bike Week

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

Small towns and unhurried routes suit its character, and the 5.0 gal tank keeps your stops frequent enough to enjoy them. Go in knowing this is heavy metal, not a light classic.

Made for Acadia National Park · Austin / Handbuilt Motorcycle Show · Blue Ridge Parkway

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

It runs the interstate all day and stays rock steady doing it, but you supply your own luggage and weather protection, and 694 lb loaded two-up is a lot to handle at low speed.

Made for Beartooth Highway · Blue Ridge Parkway · Going-to-the-Sun Road
