The Machine's Character

The Low Rider's identity sits in the 1449 cc air-cooled 45-degree V-twin, rubber-mounted in a steel twin-loop cradle with the shocks left out in the open where you can see them working. The way this engine delivers its torque matters far more here than any number on a page. Belt final drive, five speeds, a teardrop tank, chrome where chrome belongs. Nothing is hidden and nothing is apologized for. It is also one of the most heavily catalogued platforms in motorcycling, which makes the bike you buy a starting point as much as a finished object.

At road speed it settles and tracks straight, and the mass stops mattering once you are moving. Pullback bars, mid-mount controls, and a low seat make it unusually easy to get along with for a big twin, though tight parking lots and slow U-turns will always remind you what you are pushing around. There are no electronic rider aids on this one, so throttle and brake decisions are yours alone. It suits the rider who wants presence, sound, and a machine to keep making their own over years, not a bike that flatters them with software.

Known issues

  • Cam chain tensioner shoes wear prematurely

    engine common

The spring‑loaded cam chain tensioners can wear excessively, especially after ∼19,000 mi (30,000 km), leading to rattling noises and potential engine damage if not replaced. Many owners upgrade to hydraulic tensioners or gear‑drive cams.

  • Faulty valve guide seals cause oil consumption

    engine occasional

Some engines, especially early production, may consume excessive oil due to defective valve guide seals. A TSB from Harley‑Davidson addresses this; symptoms include blue smoke on startup and rapid oil loss.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Dyna Low Rider FXDL is actually built for.

Aerial view of a winding asphalt road cutting through volcanic terrain on La Gomera, Canary Islands. The road curves through sparse green vegetation with rocky volcanic peaks visible in the background and a settled valley to the left. Clear lane markings, dry climate, partly cloudy sky.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

This is your bike. It looks right parked on Main Street, sounds right rolling in, and wears your changes well. Nothing about it argues with the culture you ride for.

Made for Black Hills / Sturgis Rally Hub · A1A — Florida Atlantic Coast · Daytona Main Street / Bike Week

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

Small towns and unhurried back-road miles suit it. Plan around the 4.6-gallon tank and the total lack of wind protection, and keep your days shorter than your ambition.

Made for Acadia National Park · Austin / Handbuilt Motorcycle Show · Blue Ridge Parkway

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

It stays steady at highway speed, but there is no cruise control, no luggage, no fairing, and no ABS for mountain weather. Good for a long weekend, hard work for a month on the road.

Made for Beartooth Highway · Blue Ridge Parkway · Going-to-the-Sun Road
